Typical cuisine of Ragusa

Ragusa's traditional cuisine is one of the most authentic expressions of Sicilian gastronomy. Rooted in the rural traditions of the Iblei Mountains, it is distinguished by simple and genuine ingredients such as durum wheat, extra virgin olive oil,

local Ragusano DOP cheeses, seasonal vegetables, and select meats.

Among the most representative specialties are cavatieddi, Ragusano DOP cheeses, preserves, ricotta and almond-based desserts, not to mention the peasant dishes, rich in flavor and history.

Scaccia Ragusana is one of the most iconic products of the local cuisine.

It is a thin sheet of leavened dough, folded several times and filled with traditional ingredients such as tomato, ricotta, onion, eggplant, or parsley. In the vegetable variations, it is also suitable for vegans.

Baked in the oven, scaccia is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

It is eaten both as street food and as a main course, especially during holidays and social occasions.

Tasting Scaccia Ragusana means experiencing the history and identity of the region.

Typical Ragusa Sweets:

Tradition and Flavor of Southeastern Sicily

Ragusa's sweets represent one of the most authentic expressions of traditional Sicilian pastry-making.

Made from simple, wholesome ingredients—such as fresh ricotta, almonds, honey, sesame, and citrus—they tell the agricultural and cultural history of the Ragusa and Val di Noto regions.

Among the most famous are Sicilian cannoli,

the exquisite Ragusa biscuits, recognizable by their distinctive "S" shape, a typical breakfast treat.

Honey and sesame-based desserts are also popular, such as giuggiulena (or cubaita), an ancient specialty with a crunchy texture, prepared especially during the holidays.

Ricotta cassatelle, sweet fried ravioli, are typical of holidays like Easter and Carnival.

Tasting Ragusa's sweets means immersing yourself in the authentic flavors of Sicily, where each dessert tells a story of territory, family, and culture.
